A symbol of the Mediterranean diet, olive oil has long been recognized for its nutritional virtues. A major study conducted by the Yale School of Medicine now confirms its key role in preventing heart disease. By following thousands of people over several decades, researchers have demonstrated a clear link between regular consumption and reduced cardiovascular risk.

A long-term study with convincing results

The study involved almost 90,000 participants followed for 28 years, with detailed dietary questionnaires. Those who consumed at least half a tablespoon of olive oil a day had a lower risk of heart disease. Even after adjusting for smoking, physical activity or general diet, the protective effect remained significant. These results confirm that a simple dietary gesture can have a lasting impact on heart health.

Extra-virgin, a unique concentration of nutrients

All olive oils are beneficial, but extra-virgin stands out for its richness in polyphenols, powerful natural antioxidants. These compounds protect cells from oxidative stress and reduce inflammation, two mechanisms linked to cardiovascular disease. What’s more, extra-virgin helps improve lipid profile by increasing “good” cholesterol (HDL) and limiting oxidation of “bad” cholesterol (LDL). It therefore acts as a real shield for the cardiovascular system.

Active molecules with proven effects

Among the flagship compounds, oleocanthal, recognizable by a slight tingling sensation in the mouth, has anti-inflammatory properties comparable to those of ibuprofen. Oleic acid, the main fat in olive oil, helps maintain balanced cholesterol levels. Together, these substances explain why olive oil is considered a heart-protecting ingredient. By regularly incorporating a quality oil into your diet, you have a direct impact on cardiovascular prevention.
